Synopsis
Lady Jane (1986) is a British historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Against her own will, young Jane Grey is pushed onto the English throne to keep the crown in Protestant hands — and she holds it for just nine days.
When the boy king Edward dies, a faction led by John Dudley plays its hand: it marries off the king's bookish cousin to Guildford Dudley and proclaims her queen. The arranged match turns, unexpectedly, into love — but Mary Tudor is already closing in with a stronger claim of her own. Helena Bonham Carter took the title role near the very start of her career; a young Cary Elwes plays Guildford, and Patrick Stewart appears among the court.
Trevor Nunn, for years the head of the Royal Shakespeare Company, directed it, and you can feel the stage discipline in how each scene is built. This isn't a glossy costume piece but a sad story about two teenagers crushed by other people's politics. How it ends is in the history books, which only makes it harder to watch.
