Elena Richardson, the town's model mother, rents a unit to artist Mia Warren and her teenage daughter. It starts as charity and easy friendship between their kids. Then Elena begins digging into the newcomer's past, and curiosity curdles into a feud. The season pits two mothers against each other: one trusts that following the rules keeps disaster away, the other has spent her life ignoring them. Meanwhile a custody trial splits the town in two — does a baby belong with her undocumented Chinese birth mother or the wealthy couple raising her? Secret after secret surfaces, and by the finale a small spark becomes a blaze.
