About

Synopsis

The War Zone (1999) is Tim Roth's directing debut, a British drama adapted from Alexander Stuart's novel — available to watch online on iFILM. A London family uproots to the Devon coast. Rain, grey cliffs, a house full of strangers. Fifteen-year-old Tom (Freddie Cunliffe) is furious about the move and barely talking to anyone.

His mother (Tilda Swinton) is heavily pregnant. His father (Ray Winstone) keeps things together with an authority no one questions. His older sister Jessie (Lara Belmont) is pulling away from the family in ways Tom can't quite read — until he can. Roth shoots at a remove, letting silences carry weight and refusing to underline anything. That restraint is what makes it devastating: the film trusts you to understand what you're seeing, which is harder to shake than any explicit scene.

Roth picked up the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film for his debut here, and the film also took a prize at Venice. It's not an easy watch. But few films about family violence are this precise and this controlled in how they handle the subject. Stream The War Zone (1999) online on iFILM.
