Synopsis
United States of Tara (2009–2011) is a Showtime tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM. Tara Gregson is a suburban wife, a mother of two teenagers, and a mural painter. She also happens to share her body with several entirely different people.
Tara lives with dissociative identity disorder, and her alters take the wheel without warning. There's T, a bratty teenage girl; Buck, a gruff beer-drinking biker; and Alice, a starchy 1950s homemaker with iron rules about everything. Each one pulls the household in a different direction, and her husband Max and their kids learn to roll with a mother who might be one person at breakfast and someone else by dinner. The show refuses to play this as horror or as syrupy melodrama — it just watches an ordinary family hold itself together through the chaos.
The series was created by Diablo Cody, the writer of Juno, with Steven Spielberg among its producers. Toni Collette plays every one of Tara's selves herself and took home both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for it, with John Corbett, Rosemarie DeWitt and a young Brie Larson alongside her. Three seasons of a frank, surprisingly funny look at the mind and at acceptance — ideal if you like small-scale dramedy built around a powerhouse female lead.
