Synopsis

Thomas Munro is a former soldier who has reinvented himself as a lay preacher. He arrives to minister to a small British colonial settlement and almost immediately finds himself inside a war between Māori tribes. He saves Rangimāi (Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne), daughter of the powerful chief Maianui, and the two travel together to negotiate with Māori warlords. The peace mission goes as peace missions tend to go in this kind of terrain: Munro discovers he is neither a mediator nor a guest, but a pawn.
Tamahori directed Once Were Warriors thirty years ago. The Convert is a return to Māori New Zealand on a different historical canvas.
