Synopsis
The Long Shadow (2023) is a British crime drama you can watch online on iFILM. Across seven episodes it reconstructs the five-year hunt for the man the papers branded the Yorkshire Ripper — yet the telling deliberately turns away from the killer and toward the women he took and the ones who survived him.
From late 1975 to the start of 1981, South Yorkshire police ran a search on a scale the country had never attempted: more than a thousand officers, mountains of paperwork, and lead after lead that pointed nowhere. Thirteen women were murdered; seven lived through his attacks. The series keeps its lens on their families and the exhausted detectives rather than glamorising the man behind it all. David Morrissey, Toby Jones and Lee Ingleby star, with Lewis Arnold directing.
Writer George Kay drew on Michael Bilton's book Wicked Beyond Belief, interview transcripts and the case files, which gives the drama a dry, almost procedural exactness. Its real strength is that ethical framing: grief that the historical record too often hushed up, placed ahead of any killer's mythology. A heavy but honest watch for British true-crime fans.
