Synopsis
Before the Revolution (Prima della rivoluzione, 1964) is an Italian drama by Bernardo Bertolucci you can watch online on iFILM. It is the director's early, almost adolescent work, shot in his early twenties in his native Parma.
Fabrizio is a bourgeois son who has read his Marx and dreams of breaking with his class — but never quite finds the nerve. He is engaged to a suitable girl and flirts with revolution without leaving the drawing room. Then his aunt Gina, ten years older, sweeps in: restless, volatile, and the affair scrambles everything he thought he wanted. Adriana Asti plays her on the edge of a breakdown.
Bertolucci named his hero after Stendhal's Fabrizio, and the film itself is about the impossibility of betraying your own class — about those who cheer for change yet keep living the old life. The quoting, cinema-drunk style of the future Conformist director is already on display. Slow, talky filmmaking for fans of the European New Wave.
