Synopsis
An Angel at My Table (1990) is Jane Campion's biographical drama you can watch online in good quality. It draws on the three memoirs of New Zealand writer Janet Frame, with Kerry Fox playing the adult Janet and the film tracing her from barefoot childhood to literary fame.
A red-haired, painfully shy girl from a poor, crowded household loses two sisters young and retreats into words and poetry. Her gift gets noticed at college, but breakdowns and a deep depression follow. Doctors get it wrong, label her schizophrenic, and Janet spends years inside a psychiatric hospital where electroshock becomes routine. What spares her from a lobotomy is luck — a prize awarded to her first book just in time.
Campion made this before The Piano, originally as a three-part television serial, which is why it runs an unhurried two and a half hours. It took the Grand Jury Prize at Venice. A quiet, unsentimental account of a woman climbing out from under someone else's verdict and staying herself. Stream An Angel at My Table (1990) online on iFILM.
