John Cardinal does not believe it. He shows up for work — Delorme is running a brutal double murder on Island Road alongside a string of ATM robberies — but part of his attention never leaves his wife's case. The Island Road killings connect to a doomsday cult with nothing to negotiate and everything to protect, and a witness to the crime is still alive, which the killers know. Delorme, stretched thin as lead investigator, is also watching Cardinal and beginning to question whether grief has taken him somewhere that endangers the case.
