Synopsis
Fresh (1994) is a taut crime drama directed by Boaz Yakin — watch it online on iFILM. Twelve-year-old Michael runs drugs for rival dealers in Brooklyn, moving between bosses who would shoot each other on sight. He keeps his head down, says little, and sees everything.
Sean Nelson plays Michael with an unsettling stillness. Samuel L. Jackson shows up as his estranged father — a homeless chess genius who barely exists in Michael's life except as a teacher of the board. That game becomes the blueprint: set your opponents against each other, sacrifice a pawn if you have to, and never let anyone see your face when you're thinking. Giancarlo Espositobefore Breaking Madeplays one of the street lords Michael has to outmaneuver. When people close to him are hurt, the boy stops running errands and starts running a plan.
Produced with French backing and premiered at Sundance, the film landed quietly in 1994 but never quite got its due. It belongs in the same conversation as the harder-edged American indies of that decade — lean, factual, and genuinely troubling in a way that polished thrillers rarely manage.
