Synopsis
Woman Walks Ahead (2018) is a historical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Susanna White and drawn from the documented life of Catherine Weldon — a Brooklyn artist who travelled to the Standing Rock Sioux reservation in the late 1880s to paint a portrait of Sitting Bull.
Jessica Chastain plays Weldon with a stubbornness that feels earned rather than scripted. What she finds in South Dakota is a man (Michael Greyeyes) fighting a bureaucratic war: the U.S. government is moving to carve up tribal lands, and Sitting Bull's only weapons left are negotiation, testimony, and time. Sam Rockwell plays an army officer whose patience with the process has long since expired. The film is set during one of the more legally fraught chapters of the treaty era, and White doesn't smooth out its complications.
It's a quieter film than the western tagline suggests — less gunfighter showdown, more portrait of two people with very different kinds of power trying to do something right. Stream Woman Walks Ahead (2018) online on iFILM.
