Night on the Galactic Railroad (銀河鉄道の夜, 1985), directed by Gisaburō Sugii, is the anime you can watch online on iFILM. Adapted from Kenji Miyazawa's beloved novel, it follows a boy named Giovanni who finds himself aboard a train gliding through the stars one night.

Giovanni's days are hard: his mother is ill, his father gone, and his classmates never let up. On the night of the Star Festival he drifts off on a hill and wakes inside a mysterious train beside his schoolmate Campanella. The carriage carries them across the Milky Way, past strange passengers, glowing stations and constellations, while the journey quietly turns into a meditation on life, friendship and death. Nearly every character is drawn as an anthropomorphic cat, which makes the world feel even more otherworldly.

Sugii made not an adventure but a slow, dreamlike poem — long held shots, sparse dialogue, and a score by Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra.
