Synopsis
My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) is a British drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Stephen Frears from a screenplay by Hanif Kureishi. Omar, a young Pakistani-British man, gets handed a rundown laundrette by his crime-boss uncle and decides to make something of it. The two become partners in the business and lovers in private, against a backdrop of Thatcher-era London where every relationship is charged with race, class, and money. Frears keeps the tone somewhere between sharp comedy and social drama, neither condemning nor romanticising the world he's showing. Day-Lewis is the reason most people come to this film; Kureishi's writing is the reason they stay. It holds up in ways that feel more relevant now than they probably did in 1985.
