Synopsis
Hail Mary (Je vous salue, Marie, 1985) is Jean-Luc Godard's drama, now available to watch online on iFILM. Marie pumps gas at her father's station, plays basketball and has never slept with anyone — yet she finds herself pregnant.
Godard drops the virgin-birth story into 1980s Switzerland. Joseph, a cab driver who wants to marry her, can't grasp what is happening and torments himself with jealousy over a thing that never occurred. The camera lingers on skin, sky and water while the talk of faith and the body matters more than any plot. A young Juliette Binoche turns up in a small early role.
The film set off a real scandal — the Vatican denounced it, protests broke out across several countries, and the Pope spoke against it by name. This is slow, austere late Godard, made for viewers ready for art cinema with no narrative handholds and no fear of religious provocation. Stream Hail Mary (1985) online on iFILM.
