Synopsis
Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971) is Melvin Van Peebles' incendiary crime drama, free to watch online on iFILM. Van Peebles directs, writes, scores and stars — playing a South Central sex-show performer who grew up in a brothel.
The story turns on a single act. Sweetback watches two white cops beat a young activist half to death, and for once he hits back. Then he runs. Half the city's police force is on his trail, and the only people willing to hide him are the ones the system already wrote off: hustlers, neighbors, sex workers, even a few disillusioned Hells Angels. Dialogue is sparse; the film moves on rhythm, faces and pure forward motion.
Made independently on a shoestring, the picture became one of the highest-earning indie releases of its era and lit the fuse for the entire 1970s wave of Black cinema that followed. A young Earth, Wind & Fire wrote the debut score. Raw, angry and built outside every Hollywood rule of its day — this one is for viewers who want the root, not the polish.
