Synopsis
The Turning Point (1977) is an American drama about ballet and regret you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Herbert Ross and starring Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine, it circles back to a decades-old fork in the road: Emma became an international ballet star; Deedee left the stage for marriage and motherhood and now runs a regional dance school.
They are pulled back into each other's orbit when Deedee's teenage daughter joins Emma's company — and starts a reckless affair with a young Russian dancer played by Mikhail Baryshnikov in one of his earliest Hollywood appearances. Old jealousies surface. Old arguments reignite. Neither woman is simply wrong.
The film picked up eleven Oscar nominations — Best Picture among them, plus two competing bids for Best Actress — and came away with nothing, a statistical shutout that became its footnote. The actual reason to watch is Bancroft and MacLaine doing the harder performance: women who chose their lives and still can't stop wondering. Stream "The Turning Point" (1977) on iFILM.
