Bobby Deerfield is an American star on the European Formula One circuit, a man who has calculated risk down to the decimal and feels almost nothing because of it. That changes when he meets Lillian Morelli — capricious, teasing, and terminally ill. She pulls him out of his armor of control toward the fear, tenderness and small joys he long denied himself. Their affair plays out across Swiss mountains and racetracks, where speed once let Bobby avoid thinking about death — and now death is sitting right beside him.
The film adapts Erich Maria Remarque's novel Heaven Has No Favorites, and Pollack paces it slowly, leaning on close-ups and silences. Pacino works in a muted register, against his usual electricity — too quiet for some, his most fragile performance for others.
