Synopsis
Lay the Favorite (2012) is a comedy-drama directed by Stephen Frears — watch it online on iFILM. Rebecca Hall plays Beth, a young woman who lands in Las Vegas with little money and discovers she has an instinctive feel for sports betting odds. Bruce Willis is Dink Heimowitz, a professional sports-book operator who runs a grey-market operation and sees something genuinely useful in Beth's head for numbers.
The setup is deceptively low-key. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Dink's jealous wife, who regards Beth's presence as a constant threat. Joshua Jackson turns up as a rival bookmaker pulling Beth in a different direction. Frears keeps the tone breezy — this is Vegas without the neon mythology, just unglamorous arithmetic in hotel rooms and phone calls to New York. What makes it work is Hall: she plays Beth as sharp and slightly oblivious at the same time, a combination that keeps the film moving even when the plot meanders.
