Synopsis
Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005) is a British comedy-drama directed by Stephen Frears — watch it online on iFILM. Judi Dench plays the sharp-tongued widow Laura Henderson, who in 1937 buys London's Windmill Theatre and refuses to let it sit idle.
She teams up with impresario Vivian Van Damm, played with cantankerous charm by Bob Hoskins, and the two dream up a scheme: keep the show running nonstop. When the Lord Chamberlain threatens to shut them down, Mrs Henderson argues for nude tableaux — performers unclothed but motionless, technically art. The Luftwaffe is another matter. Through the Blitz, the Windmill stays open anyway, selling out every night to audiences desperate for somewhere warm and bright.
Frears keeps the film on the right side of bittersweet — funny when it could be maudlin, honest when it could be sentimental. Dench picked up an Oscar nomination for the role, and the chemistry between her and Hoskins carries every scene. Stream Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005) online on iFILM.
