Synopsis
Lonesome Jim (2005) is Steve Buscemi's indie dramedy, and you can watch online on iFILM. After failing to make it as a writer in New York, thirty-something Jim crawls back to his parents' house in small-town Indiana to lick his wounds.
Home means the family candy factory, where his uncle quietly runs drugs on the side and his relentlessly upbeat mother simply refuses to be rattled. Then his older brother Tim, crushed by his own gloom, drives straight into a tree. With Tim in the hospital, the listless Jim gets stuck coaching his brother's kids' basketball team — quite possibly the worst in the state. The one pulling him out of his slump is Anika (Liv Tyler), a single-mom nurse with a clear-eyed take on life.
Casey Affleck plays the whiner and the quitter so well that you pity him and laugh at him at once. Behind the camera, Buscemi makes a low-key film about an overgrown child wedged between self-pity and the need to finally grow up. A wry, melancholy comedy for anyone who loves mid-2000s American indie. Stream Lonesome Jim (2005) online on iFILM.
