Calvaire

Calvaire (2005) is a Belgian horror film by Fabrice Du Welz you can watch online on iFILM. A few days before Christmas, travelling entertainer Marc Stevens is stranded in the foggy marshlands of the Hautes Fagnes region when his van gives out. A local oddity leads him to a shuttered inn, and the innkeeper Bartel seems genuinely pleased to take him in.

By morning it's clear Bartel's hospitality is something else entirely. The man has been alone for years, his wife long gone, and he has quietly decided Marc is her replacement. The surrounding village is worse: men who seem to have lost track of the line between people and livestock, wandering the mud with purposes no one explains. Marc tries to leave. He can't.

Du Welz built this film closer to Polanski than to slasher — the dread is slow and theatrical, carried by Laurent Lucas's performance and the swamp-grey cinematography.
