Synopsis
Easy Virtue (1928) is an early Alfred Hitchcock silent film you can watch online on iFILM, adapted from Noël Coward's 1924 stage play. Larita Filton survives a scandalous divorce trial over alleged adultery, then escapes to the French Riviera, where she falls for a young Englishman named John Whittaker and quietly remarries. Isabel Jeans plays Larita.
Trouble arrives when John brings her home to his family. They disapprove on sight. The past she thought she'd buried in a courtroom starts to surface — and Hitchcock builds pressure not through action but through the cruelty of social propriety and inherited reputation. For those tracing where Hitchcock came from, this is a useful early marker: the instinct for psychological threat is already present; the tools just happen to be silent.
