Synopsis
October (1928) is the Soviet silent drama co-directed by Sergei Eisenstein and Grigori Alexandrov, commissioned for the tenth anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, and now available to watch online on iFILM. Shot partly inside the actual Winter Palace, the film reconstructs events from February through November 1917 with the full resources of the Soviet state behind it.
The story moves from the toppling of the tsar's statue through street fighting in Petrograd, Lenin's arrival at Finland Station, the threat from General Kornilov's advancing troops, and the Bolsheviks' seizure of the palace. Nikandrov was cast as Lenin not for acting ability but for uncanny physical resemblance — Eisenstein wanted a walking newsreel frame, not a performance.
What the film actually is, beneath the politics, is a laboratory for Eisenstein's intellectual montage theory: images cut together not by story logic but by conceptual collision, forcing the viewer to synthesise meaning between shots. That technique, first worked out here and in Battleship Potemkin, went on to influence a century of filmmakers. Stream October (1928) online on iFILM.
