Arnold decides to come out to his parents at his birthday party, and it's the most high-stakes scene the series has attempted. Claire flies back from Berlin carrying a decision none of them have had to face before. Tom meets Ella. A drug experiment night out with the group ends, unexpectedly, in hospital. While Arnold is away at a maths summit, Josh and Arnold try an open relationship — it turns out to be more complicated than Josh expected. There is also Ben: someone from Josh's past who has brain surgery scheduled, and who Josh visits quietly without telling Arnold. Episode nine traps the whole group in an observation wheel cabin for one of the stranger bottle episodes the show has done. Season 3 is where Please Like Me shifts from coming-of-age to something harder to name — people trying to actually work out adult life in real time.
