Synopsis
The Field Guide to Evil (2019) is a horror anthology you can watch online on iFILM. Eight filmmakers from eight countries each took a piece of local legend or a bedtime scare and built a short chapter around it. The result is an atlas of folk nightmares, running from the Austrian Alps to the backwoods of Turkey and Greece.
Every segment leans on its own folklore: a witch who comes for a woman in childbirth under the full moon, a demon roused by a broken taboo, the creatures villagers used to frighten children with by the fire. The stories share no plot — only the idea that horror as a genre grew straight out of these ancient attempts to explain the dark inside people.
The directors include Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz of Goodnight Mommy, Britain's Peter Strickland and Turkey's Can Evrenol. With so many distinct hands at work, it never settles into one tone — uneven by design, but a real find for anyone who follows folk horror and arthouse fright.
