The brief sounds straightforward: track down a kidnapped British nuclear scientist. In practice Palmer sinks into a game where allies turn into threats and his own service would happily burn him at the first slip. Joe Cole takes the part Michael Caine made famous and plays Palmer sharp, dry and uneasily human, with Lucy Boynton and Tom Hollander circling around him.
