Two timelines braid together. In 1920s Korea, under Japanese rule, a fisherman's daughter named Sunja grows up in Yeongdo, falls for the wealthy and dangerous broker Hansu, and pays a steep price for the future he opens up to her, before leaving for Osaka as the wife of a gentle pastor, Isak. Decades on, in 1989, her grandson Solomon, a New York banker, comes back to Tokyo and tries to turn his Korean roots into leverage on a real-estate deal. The young and the old Sunja answer each other from scene to scene, and the seventh chapter rewinds to the 1923 Yokohama disaster that reshaped everyone's path.
