The Mary Tyler Moore Show is a CBS sitcom you can watch online on iFILM — seven seasons, 1970 to 1977, and one of the few shows of that era that aged into a genuine landmark rather than a period curiosity. Mary Richards, thirty and newly single, relocates to Minneapolis, stumbles into a job as associate producer at fictional station WJM, and starts building a life entirely on her own terms.

Her newsroom: short-tempered but fair boss Lou Grant (Ed Asner), quick-witted writer Murray (Gavin MacLeod), and the hopelessly pompous anchor Ted Baxter (Ted Knight). Upstairs neighbor Rhoda (Valerie Harper) and meddlesome landlady Phyllis (Cloris Leachman) round out the domestic side. Later seasons gave Betty White a turn as the sweetly venomous Sue Ann Nivens.

Created by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns, the series collected 29 Emmy Awards — but the more durable achievement was putting a female protagonist on screen defined by ambition and self-determination at a time when that was genuinely unusual.
