Synopsis
The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970) is Sam Peckinpah's sun-baked Western comedy — watch it online on iFILM. Jason Robards plays Cable Hogue, double-crossed and left to die in the desert by two partners who figured the sun would do their work for them. It doesn't.
Hogue stumbles onto a spring in a spot that happens to sit directly on the stagecoach route to town. He stakes a claim, builds a way station, and charges five cents a drink — saving every coin for the day his former partners ride through. Hildy (Stella Stevens), a pragmatic woman from the nearest settlement, moves in and complicates things in the best possible way. David Warner drifts in and out as an itinerant preacher with flexible principles. Then the automobile arrives and the whole era starts to dissolve.
Made between The Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs, this is the warmest film Peckinpah ever directed — funny and melancholy in equal measure, with a finale that lands differently than anything else in his catalogue. Stream The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970) on iFILM.
