Leading the inquiry is Kendra Malley, recently widowed and pulled back into the field by her old mentor. What looks like an accident soon looks deliberate. The lone survivor seems to be holding something back, the story around Captain Donovan keeps shifting, sabotage moves onto the table, and someone close to Kendra turns out not to be who she trusted. By the midpoint the question is no longer what brought the plane down but who is burying the answer. The team races for the black boxes against people who'd rather they stayed lost.
