Synopsis
Ascension (2014) is a Canadian-American sci-fi miniseries you can watch online on iFILM. The premise is cold and clean: in 1963, the U.S. government secretly launched a generation ship carrying hundreds of men, women and children on a hundred-year voyage to colonise a distant planet. Director Vincenzo Natali helms a story where space exploration doubles as a sealed-world social experiment.
Fifty years into the journey, a young woman turns up dead — the first murder in the ship's history. Officer Aaron Galoway starts digging, and the answers keep pointing somewhere nobody wants to look. Tricia Helfer plays Viondra Drayton, a woman who has turned the ship's social hierarchy into her own instrument of survival. Gil Bellows is the commander trying to hold order together while the people who designed this mission feed him less than half the truth.
What makes Ascension work is its locked-room tension: there is nowhere to run, no outside help, and fifty more years of this ahead. The retro-futurist 1960s aesthetic — cold chrome, fitted uniforms, cocktail-hour politics aboard a starship — gives the whole thing a mood that straight sci-fi rarely bothers with.
