Synopsis
The Pride of the Yankees (1942) is Sam Wood's biographical drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Gary Cooper plays ballplayer Lou Gehrig, the shy son of German immigrants who grows into one of America's most beloved athletes.
The film walks you from a cramped New York apartment all the way to Yankee Stadium. Gehrig fights his way into the big leagues, strings together an astonishing run of games without missing a single one, and marries the sharp-tongued Eleanor (Teresa Wright) — and then, at the height of it all, his own body starts to fail him. The illness creeps in quietly and gives him no way out. Babe Ruth, Gehrig's real teammate, turns up playing himself, with Walter Brennan rounding out the cast.
Everything builds to Gehrig's farewell speech to the crowd — the one where he calls himself the luckiest man alive — a scene Americans still revisit today.
