Synopsis
American Underdog (2021) is a sports biographical drama directed by Andrew and Jon Erwin — watch online on iFILM. Zachary Levi plays Kurt Warner, who spent his twenties stocking grocery shelves in Iowa while his shot at professional football kept not arriving.
Warner was cut, shuffled to the practice squad, and largely forgotten by the NFL before the St. Louis Rams handed him a starting spot in 1999 at age 28. What followed was one of the more improbable seasons in league history: Super Bowl champion and two-time MVP, eventually inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Anna Paquin plays Brenda, the woman who believed in him through the years of nothing happening. Dennis Quaid is his coach.
Levi makes Warner's self-doubt more interesting than the victories — the film is at its best in the long middle stretch before anything goes right, not the highlight-reel finale.
