Synopsis
The War Game (1966) is Peter Watkins' mock-documentary for the BBC, available to watch online on iFILM. Shot in newsreel style, the 48-minute film walks through a hypothetical Soviet nuclear strike on Britain — evacuation chaos, overwhelmed hospitals, bodies burning in the streets. The BBC funded it, then refused to broadcast it, declaring the footage too disturbing for television audiences.
The ban held for nearly two decades; British viewers finally saw it on TV in 1985. In the meantime, the film reached cinemas and took the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature — unusual for a made-for-TV production. Watkins used non-professional actors and no special effects. The horror comes entirely from clinical description: burn classifications, radiation exposure charts, casualty projections. That methodical tone is what makes it so hard to shake.
