The Balconettes

The Balconettes (Les femmes au balcon, 2024) is a French horror-comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Marseille is cooking at 46 degrees. Three flatmates — Nicole, Ruby and Élise — escape the heat on their balcony and pass the time spying on the handsome man across the street.

An invitation upstairs feels like a lucky break. It isn't. A late drink at the charming neighbor's place ends in blood, and the women are left cleaning up far more than spilled wine. Noémie Merlant, who broke out with Portrait of a Lady on Fire, directs and takes one of the lead roles, alongside Souheila Yacoub, Sanda Codreanu and Lucas Bravo. The tone swerves on purpose: what starts as a sweaty summer comedy about female friendship lurches into grotesque, blood-soaked satire with sharp feminist teeth.
