Synopsis
The Dresser (1983) is a British drama directed by Peter Yates — watch it online on iFILM. The setting is wartime England, and a touring Shakespearean company is still performing King Lear while German bombs fall outside. The company's brilliant, dictatorial leading man — addressed only as "Sir" — is visibly coming apart.
The man keeping him together is Norman, Sir's dresser, who has built his entire life around this difficult genius. He lays out the costumes, prompts the lines, absorbs the cruelty, and still believes in Sir long after Sir has stopped believing in himself. Ronald Harwood adapted his own stage play, drawn from years dressing actor Donald Wolfit. Both Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay landed Best Actor nominations at the same Academy Awards ceremony — a rare double.
Stage and reality blur in a way that is genuinely affecting: Lear falls apart on the boards; Sir falls apart behind them. Watch The Dresser (1983) online on iFILM.
