The Deep

The Deep (1977) is a British-American adventure thriller directed by Peter Yates, available to watch online on iFILM. Young vacationers Gail and David are diving off the coast of Bermuda when they pull up something that doesn't belong to them — salvage from a wreck that other people have very strong feelings about. Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset play the couple; Robert Shaw is the seasoned diver who becomes their unlikely guide and protector.

Adapted from the novel by Peter Benchley — who also wrote Jaws — the film leans hard into the physicality of what it's depicting. The underwater photography is the real draw here; the production spent an unusual amount of time below the surface, and it shows. Lou Gossett brings menace as the local crime boss who decides two tourists have found something he wants back. The tension builds slowly and then arrives all at once.
