Synopsis
King Solomon's Mines (1950) is a sweeping adventure you can watch online on iFILM, drawn from H. Rider Haggard's novel. Seasoned hunter Allan Quatermain reluctantly agrees to guide Elizabeth Curtis across uncharted Africa in search of her husband, who vanished chasing the fabled diamond mines. What looks simple on a map turns into a brutal trek.
The journey crosses savanna, jungle and the territory of hostile tribes, and the prickly stranger Quatermain is escorting slowly becomes something more. Deborah Kerr and Stewart Granger lead, their restrained chemistry holding the whole thing together. Rather than fake it on a soundstage, the production shot on location in East Africa — real herds, real rivers, real villages — giving the film a scale no studio set could match. That location camerawork and the editing each took home an Oscar. A grand piece of mid-century studio adventure, this is one to stream when you want the genuine article.
