Synopsis
Born Yesterday (1950) is George Cukor's dry Hollywood comedy, available to watch online on iFILM. Garson Kanin adapted his own Broadway smash — four years on stage before Columbia Pictures bought the rights — and the material kept its edge in transit.
Junkyard millionaire Harry Brock (Broderick Crawford) rolls into Washington with money to spend and a congressman or two to buy. His companion, ex-showgirl Billie Dawn, is clearly not suited to political society. Brock hires journalist Paul Verrall (William Holden) to sharpen her up — a project that goes far outside the original brief.
Judy Holliday plays Billie as a woman hiding a calculating intelligence behind practiced helplessness. The performance is controlled and exact, which is why it took her the Best Actress Oscar in 1951, ahead of both Bette Davis and Anne Baxter. Stream Born Yesterday (1950) on iFILM.
