Synopsis
The Strange Ones (Les Enfants terribles, 1950) is a French drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Jean-Pierre Melville from Jean Cocteau's own novel. Cocteau wrote the script and narrates it himself. A snowball to the chest leaves teenage Paul bedridden, sealed off at home with his sister.
Paul and Elisabeth build a private universe with its own rules, and they refuse to step outside it. Then the outside world pushes in. Paul's friend Gérard falls for Elisabeth; a girl named Agathe arrives who looks unsettlingly like a boy from Paul's past. Jealousy, cruelty and tenderness tighten around the siblings like a slipknot. Nobody here wants to grow up, and the cost of that runs steep.
Melville shot most of it in one cluttered room, and the cramped frame turns sibling closeness into something airless. A cold, peculiar film about love as a destructive force — perfect for anyone drawn to black-and-white French cinema and to Cocteau's poetic strangeness.
