Stromboli

Stromboli (1950) is Roberto Rossellini's stark Italian-American drama streaming online on iFILM, built around Ingrid Bergman at the peak of their real-life affair and shot on a live volcano with no movie magic in sight.

Karin, a Lithuanian refugee stranded in a postwar detention camp, marries a fisherman from Stromboli to get her papers and escape. The island gives her none of what she was running toward — just relentless wind, a silent village that never accepts her, and a husband who cannot understand why a place he loves feels like a cage to her. Bergman carries nearly every scene, and the gap between their two worlds grows more suffocating with every reel.

Rossellini worked in a stripped-down neorealist style, casting actual islanders alongside his star and dispensing with much of a written script.
