Synopsis
Welcome to Earth (2021), Season 1 is a National Geographic documentary you can watch online on iFILM — six episodes in which Will Smith goes where he's frankly terrified to go.
Every episode is a separate expedition built around one sense the planet uses to speak to us. Smith drops into the throat of a live volcano chasing sound below human hearing, sinks 3,300 feet into water darker than space, tracks the wildebeest migration across the Serengeti and trails tiger sharks by scent alone. The run ends on an Icelandic glacier, where the team is dropped in by helicopter. His guides aren't stuntmen — they're working National Geographic explorers: a marine biologist, a polar adventurer, an engineer.
The point isn't the adrenaline, it's the lens. The season reframes Earth through senses humans either lack or stopped noticing. If you grew up on National Geographic specials the shape will feel familiar, yet Smith's wide-eyed enthusiasm turns pop science into something close to an adventure show. Thirty years ago, Will Smith was mesmerized by a photo of the incredible wildebeest migration across the Serengeti in a National Geographic magazine. Now he visits those same wildebeests and discovers an amazing survival strategy.

On the trail of tiger sharks in the Pacific, Will explores the power of smell. For humans, the sense of smell triggers deep memories and emotions, but it has an even more vital function in the animal world.

Will explores the Namibia Desert, where both the landscape and time seem to have stood still for over 50 million years. Will discovers that humans can only see a small sliver of what’s moving around us because everything on the planet is happening either too fast or too slow for us to perceive.

For Will’s final journey, an ultimate challenge. He and polar explorer Dwayne Fields are dropped by helicopter in the middle of an Icelandic glacier.
