The whole arc of the trilogy has been built on one man's attempt to keep his conscience intact inside a machine designed to destroy it. By this point Kaji has compromised, survived, and lost more than he can account for — and he is still walking, still trying to reach his wife, still making decisions with no good options. Kobayashi shoots the retreat with a stillness that makes the violence land harder when it comes. Nakadai carries all of it without a single false note.
