Synopsis
The Misfits (1961) is a John Huston drama you can watch online on iFILM, written by Arthur Miller as a vehicle for Marilyn Monroe. It was the final completed film for both Monroe and Clark Gable, who died twelve days after shooting wrapped.
Roslyn has come to Reno to finalise her divorce. In a bar she meets Gay Langland (Gable), a weathered Nevada cowboy with no fixed occupation, and his friend Guido (Eli Wallach), a mechanic who never finished the house he started building for his wife. Montgomery Clift plays Perce, a former rodeo rider held together by tape and stubbornness. The four drift out to the desert together — the men have a plan to round up wild mustangs, which they'll sell for dog food, since there's no market for working horses anymore.
Cinematographer Russell Metty shot the Nevada landscape with a bleakness that suits the script's mood exactly. What Miller wrote is an elegy for people who don't fit the shape the postwar world decided on, and the casting makes every frame feel like it costs something.
