Synopsis
Samurai Rebellion (1967) is a Japanese period drama directed by Masaki Kobayashi, available to watch online on iFILM. Toshiro Mifune plays Isaburo Sasahara, a veteran swordsman who has obeyed his feudal lord without question for decades. One order changes that.
His son is ordered to marry the lord's discarded mistress — a woman cast out of favor. The forced arrangement becomes a real marriage. Then the lord wants her back. Father and son have to decide whether to hand her over, as every rule they live by demands, or refuse and face the consequences. Tatsuya Nakadai plays Isaburo's closest friend and the clan's finest duelist; his presence in the final act raises the stakes beyond a simple father-son story.
Kobayashi made this film four years after Harakiri — another Shochiku production that took aim at the same target: not samurai enemies, but the feudal code itself. The widescreen black-and-white photography gives the film a monumental quality, each composition carved like stone. It argues that blind loyalty and human dignity cannot coexist — and Kobayashi makes that argument with absolute clarity. Stream Samurai Rebellion (1967) on iFILM.
