Synopsis
Fatherland (2026) is Paweł Pawlikowski's historical drama, available to watch online on iFILM. The summer of 1949 finds writer Thomas Mann getting behind the wheel for the first time since his exile, ready to cross a Germany still buried in rubble.
His daughter Erika rides with him. The road carries them through a country split in two — from Frankfurt, where the Americans call the shots, to Soviet-run Weimar. Among the ruins the pair argue, fall silent, dredge up the past, and circle the same hard question: is there still a homeland left for them to return to. August Diehl plays Mann and Sandra Hüller plays Erika, with Joachim Meyerhoff and Joanna Kulig rounding out the ensemble.
Pawlikowski, who made Ida and Cold War, keeps his usual lean precision here: 82 minutes with no wasted gesture, where the postwar landscape speaks as loudly as the characters do. Four countries — Germany, France, Italy and Poland — put it together. A quiet, grown-up film for anyone who likes history told through one family's conversation.
