Synopsis
Amundsen (2019) — watch online on iFILM — is a Norwegian historical drama directed by Espen Sandberg, with Pål Sverre Hagen as Roald Amundsen. On December 14, 1911, Amundsen's team planted their flag at the South Pole — the first humans to stand there. The film asks what that achievement cost everyone around him.
Starting from his early years as an obsessed young navigator, the story tracks the singular drive that pushed Amundsen from one frozen expedition to the next. Katherine Waterston plays the woman he loved and repeatedly abandoned. Every journey north or south meant another vanishing act. The tagline puts it plainly: "Not the story of a hero." The film means it — this is a portrait of ambition that consumed its subject as much as it defined him.
The production, shot across Norway and the Czech Republic, doesn't soften the physical reality of polar travel: the scale of the ice, the cold that doesn't read as dramatic but just as relentless. Pål Sverre Hagen holds the center with a controlled ferocity — you understand Amundsen's pull without being asked to admire him uncritically. A biopic with genuine edges.
