Synopsis
The Sweet Hereafter (1997) is a Canadian drama directed by Atom Egoyan, adapted from Russell Banks' novel — watch it online on iFILM. In a small mountain town, a school bus breaks through the ice and most of the children are killed. Weeks later, a lawyer from the city arrives to sign families up for a class-action suit.
Mitchell Stephens (Ian Holm) moves through the community with quiet determination, collecting grief and testing the edges of each household's pain. A teenage survivor, Nicole (Sarah Polley), holds a piece of the story that could undo everything — including herself. Egoyan tells it out of sequence, cutting between before and after and the present-tense drive through winter roads, so the tragedy is never a single moment but something that keeps arriving.
The film took the Grand Prix at Cannes and received two Academy Award nominations, for directing and adapted screenplay. What stays with you isn't the accident but the silence around it — and the question of whether any lawsuit, or any verdict, actually touches what was lost.
