Synopsis
Written on the Wind (1956) is a Douglas Sirk melodrama you can watch online on iFILM, starring Rock Hudson, Lauren Bacall, Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone.
Kyle Hadley has Texas oil money, a beautiful wife, and a loyal best friend in geologist Mitch Wayne — and manages to burn through all of it. He drinks. He rages. He suspects everyone around him. His wife Lucy stays longer than she should. Kyle's sister Marylee wants what she cannot have and is willing to bring the whole thing down to prove it. Mitch stands in the middle, watching the family collapse.
Universal shot the film in Technicolor excess that was entirely deliberate on Sirk's part — the screaming palette was the point. Malone took home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work as Marylee; Stack landed a nomination in the same category for Kyle. What looks like glossy soap opera is actually a precise dissection of class, desire and inherited wealth. Sirk used the studio's own shine against it. Stream Written on the Wind (1956) on iFILM.
