Synopsis
Magnificent Obsession (1954) is a Douglas Sirk melodrama you can watch online on iFILM. Idle rich playboy Bob Merrick wrecks his speedboat, and the one resuscitator in town is busy keeping him alive while a beloved local doctor dies for want of it.
Eaten by guilt, Bob seeks out the doctor's widow, Helen, and falls for her. Then fate strikes again: a freak accident leaves Helen blind. Merrick sets out to give back everything he took from her, quietly remaking his own life in the process. Jane Wyman plays the blind woman with restraint and no self-pity, while Rock Hudson, as Merrick, became a top-tier star off the back of this role. Barbara Rush and Agnes Moorehead round out the cast.
Sirk adapted Lloyd C. Douglas's novel and drowned the plot in lush color and swelling music — the heightened, glossy melodrama that critics later reassessed as something far smarter than soap.
